Academic Approach

Curriculum Overview at Apogee Sacramento

At Apogee Sacramento, we offer a unique and vibrant educational experience that will nurture both the academic and personal growth of your child. Our program is designed with best practices from a diverse range of educational approaches–combining time-tested methods with current innovative learning models to create a dynamic, effective and enriching educational experience that will truly prepare our young people to thrive in life.

As a Christ-centered program, we integrate a Biblical worldview throughout our exploration of different subjects, and also prioritize chapel times and scripture memorization in our weekly rhythms. Our influences and inspirations include Montessori, Reggio Emilia, Project Based Learning, Classical Education, Charlotte Mason, Socratic method, and many more. We have designed our program to ensure a well-rounded education that fosters a love for learning while building strong academic foundations, character, and real world skills.

Math

We utilize Montessori materials as well as Saxon Math, math games, movement and songs to encourage hands-on learning and mastery, helping students understand and apply mathematical concepts in a concrete, engaging way. Additionally, students are able to access online learning resources to reinforce concepts learned in the studio.

Language Arts

In Language Arts, we use The Writing Road to Reading (Spalding) alongside All About Reading to develop strong reading and spelling skills, emphasizing mastery of basic phonograms. By learning to write words correctly, students naturally enhance their ability to read and decode them. For structured writing development, older students use Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW), which provides a clear, systematic approach to composition. Additionally, students engage with a diverse selection of age-appropriate fiction and nonfiction, seamlessly integrating with Social Studies to deepen their understanding of the world. This comprehensive approach fosters reading fluency, strong writing skills, and meaningful connections across subjects.

Social Studies

History comes to life at Apogee Sacramento! Students engage with history through songs, “living” books, and interactive experiences that make learning memorable and meaningful. They build a strong historical framework, deepening their understanding as they grow. Students make richer connections in the literature they read and develop a broad knowledge base of important historical figures and events. By exploring both the successes and mistakes of the past, they develop critical thinking skills that equip them as young leaders to navigate today’s challenges with wisdom from the past.

Science

Our science curriculum is integrated into our hands-on project based learning focuses where students get to explore concepts and their real-life application in engaging ways. By doing rather than just reading, students develop a deeper curiosity about the world, a value for problem solving, and meaningful application of the knowledge they develop.

Technology

Technology is used as a supervised, supplemental tool to reinforce math and literacy concepts, and support research, but our primary focus is on hands-on, immersive learning. This approach fosters critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity without over-reliance on screens while also helping students develop familiarity with technology as a valuable and versatile resource.

MASTERY FOCUS

Measures of Learning & Tracking Progress

At Apogee Sacramento, students move forward based on understanding, not just time spent in a classroom. Instead of traditional letter grades, we award badges as students demonstrate mastery in core subjects. Parents, Guides, and students will work together, creating goals for which badges to pursue each sprint. This ensures that students fully grasp foundational concepts before advancing, preventing learning gaps that can lead to frustration or self-doubt later on.

This model builds confidence, critical thinking, and intrinsic motivation by focusing on true comprehension rather than short-term memorization, test scores, or letter grades. By honoring each child’s unique pace, we cultivate lifelong learners and assure that no student is left behind or held back by a standardized timeline.

What happens if a student struggles to master a concept?

Students are given additional time, resources, and support to revisit and practice concepts they find challenging. The goal is to build understanding and confidence without the fear of failure or falling behind. When a Guide notices a child needing extra support on a concept, they communicate with parents and provide resources for extra practice at home.

Does the mastery-based model prepare students for traditional schools or colleges?

Yes! The mastery-based approach equips students with critical thinking, problem-solving, and time management skills that are invaluable in traditional settings. Colleges and employers are increasingly valuing mastery-based approaches because they foster deeper understanding and real-world readiness.

How does the mastery-based model handle different learning styles?

Our mastery-based approach is highly personalized, allowing students to explore concepts in ways that align with their unique strengths and learning preferences. This approach encourages creativity and adaptability.

Will my child be motivated to work hard without grades or tests?

Absolutely! Motivation comes from clear expectations, regular progress tracking, and a culture of goal-setting. In our mastery-based model, students shift from relying on external rewards (like grades) to experiencing the intrinsic satisfaction of hard work and growth. With support from Guides and parents, they develop independence, responsibility, and a love for learning—driven by curiosity, hands-on engagement, and the confidence that comes from mastering new skills.

OPEN HOUSES & SHOWCASES

At the end of each sprint, we invite family and friends to join us for a special Open House or Showcase, where students take center stage to share what they’ve learned, created, and discovered. These events are more than just presentations—they're celebrations of growth, curiosity, and hard work. Whether it’s an exhibition of projects, a live demonstration of new knowledge and skills, or a reflection on challenges and breakthroughs, our Showcases give students the opportunity to take ownership of their learning and build confidence in sharing their journey. It’s a time for our community to come together, honor each student's progress, and experience the joy of deep, meaningful learning in action!

If you’re considering Apogee Sacramento for your family, Showcases are the perfect opportunity to experience our unique approach firsthand. Come see our students in action, experience our community, and get a real taste of how we cultivate confident, capable young leaders!
